The painting of Jean-François Lacalmontie is abstract. He wants it cold, like the ice floe, but also deeply embodied. He burns his “signs” with a blowtorch, but wants to record the trembling of fear, anxiety. He refuses all references to “signs” but claims a symbolic value. In short, his work is what one might call “paradoxical” painting.
